Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
